Let there be Light….. furniture!!

My husband and I have been in the process of a household decor re-do since our wedding in April of this past year. Blending families, furniture, traditions, junk drawers…etc., has been a wonderful experience. In the process we have weeded out a lot of furniture neither of us really liked for whatever reason. Holding on to pieces we did really like or flat out needed to keep. My bedroom furniture was one of these “need to keep” items. Not crazy about it but it is what it is. This has given us the opportunity to sit back and think about what we really want. We decided I wanted light colored furniture. Not WHITE, LIGHT! Let that be cream, ivory, light grey….. get it? Light! So I began my search… I fell in love with several pieces at several different local stores in the area. Did NOT fall in love with the price! Through all my internet searches I came across a blog on painting furniture. Voila!! The color I really wanted! There it was! It was the perfect, creamy, ivory, driftwood-y light grey with all the distressing and details you cannot get at the big furniture chain stores. I decided I’ll do it. I’ll paint my furniture! I had never heard of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. (ASCP) Thanks to my Sister in Law for the intro! I had never heard of waxing furniture after painting. I have to say I’m a fan! HUGE FAN!! I had to test my skills first, of course, and transformed my grandmothers Duncan Phyfe china cabinet. (See that project here) I tackled my first piece of furniture on a Saturday. I used ASCP Country Gray. I also used the flat brush. It took about 4 hours to finish the piece. Now mind you – this was in between two paint coats, football games, sanding, waxing on, waxing off, (ahh Daniel-son), spending time outside with my family, preparing lunch and dinner and changing out the hardware. I could have easily completed it in half the time, but it was Saturday! A beautiful Saturday! A beautiful Saturday in October on the Gulf Coast…. it doesn’t get much better 🙂 So here’s my finished piece….. and a kinda crappy picture of my before. I LOVE the detail sanding the corners gives! Oh and I swapped out the hardware… stole it from my kitchen! HA! Happened to be the same exact number of pulls… crazy how things work out sometimes, huh?
